What this guide covers:

  • What makes a website convert, before you choose any tool
  • A launch checklist your in-house team can run
  • WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow, with the plugins that matter
  • AI website builders (Base44, Lovable, Bolt) and using Claude or ChatGPT, and the catches
  • Free tools for measuring and improving conversion
  • What an in-house team can handle, and where an agency helps

You can launch a website in an afternoon now. Wix, Squarespace and Webflow have made that possible for years, and AI builders such as Base44 and Lovable will turn a written prompt into a working site. Building a site is no longer the hard part.

Getting it to produce leads is. A good-looking site that nobody enquires through is a common result when a build is rushed.

The encouraging part is that most of what makes a site convert is within reach of a capable in-house team. This guide covers that process, the tools at each step, what they cost and where they catch people out. Where outside help makes a real difference, we say so.

Prices are in US dollars and were checked on 3 November 2026. Vendors change plans often, so confirm on the linked pages before you buy.

What makes a website convert

A conversion is a visitor doing what you want: booking a call, requesting a quote, starting a trial. Get these six things right before you open any builder, because no tool fixes them for you.

One clear offer above the fold

Within a few seconds, a visitor should know what you do, who it is for, and what to do next. Lead with the outcome, not the company history.

Proof next to the claim

Put customer names, reviews, and results beside the claims they support. Use only figures you can source. One specific, named quote does more than vague praise.

One main action per page

Pick a primary action, such as “Request a quote”, and repeat it. Secondary links should not compete with it.

Short forms

Ask only for what you need to follow up. Every extra field is another reason to leave.

Speed and mobile

Check pages on a phone. Large hero videos, uncompressed images, and heavy plugins are the usual causes of slow pages.

Tracking from day one

Record form submissions, calls, and button clicks as conversion events. Without them, you cannot tell which changes help.

Plan before you build: a launch checklist

Most conversion problems start before anyone opens a builder. Work through this list first.

  • Define your main conversion and record today’s baseline.
  • List the pages you need: home, services, how it works, case studies and contact.
  • Write the copy first. Layouts built around placeholder text rarely survive real copy.
  • Choose the platform (next section) based on who will maintain it.
  • Set up Google Analytics 4 and Search Console before launch.
  • Connect forms to your CRM or inbox and test every one.
  • Give each page a unique title, a meta description and a single H1.
  • Test on mobile and on a slow connection.
  • Plan redirects if you are replacing an existing site, so old URLs keep their rankings.
  • Review results two weeks after launch and fix what the data shows.

For the search side of a launch, see our guide to B2B SEO for lead generation.

Website builders and WordPress: what you get and the catches

Wix

Wix lists its paid plans from $17 to $159 a month (Wix pricing). The drag-and-drop editor and built-in AI tools suit small teams who want to move quickly. The free plan is for testing, since it uses a Wix address. The catch is portability: if you outgrow Wix, moving usually means rebuilding the site elsewhere.

Squarespace

Squarespace’s own pricing data lists Basic at $19, Core at $29, Plus at $49 and Advanced at $99 a month on annual billing, or $25, $39, $65 and $139 billed monthly (Squarespace pricing). It is strong on design polish and simple to manage. The catch is flexibility: complex lead flows, custom integrations and advanced tracking can hit its limits.

Webflow

Webflow has a free Starter plan and paid site plans from $15 a month billed yearly, based on its pricing page as read by a pricing tracker on 14 October 2026. It gives designers precise control and clean output. The catch is the learning curve. Its plan structure has also changed more than once, so check before you commit.

WordPress

WordPress itself is free. You pay for hosting, a domain and any premium themes or plugins. It is the most flexible route and the easiest to share between an in-house team and an agency. The catch is upkeep: you are responsible for updates, backups, security and speed, and every extra plugin adds weight and risk.

WordPress plugins worth knowing

  • Elementor: a visual page builder with a free version. Pro adds forms, popups and theme building. Overbuilt pages get heavy.
  • Yoast SEO or Rank Math: titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and basic schema. The free versions cover the essentials.
  • WPForms or Gravity Forms: lead forms with spam protection and CRM connections. WPForms has a free Lite version. Gravity Forms is paid.
  • Site Kit by Google: brings Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights into your WordPress dashboard. Free.
  • A caching plugin: WP Rocket (paid) or LiteSpeed Cache (free) can cut load times noticeably when configured properly.

Keep the list short. Each plugin is something to update and something that can slow the page.

AI website builders, and using Claude or ChatGPT

AI builders let you describe a site in plain English and get a working version back in minutes. They are genuinely useful for prototypes, campaign pages, and internal tools. For your main marketing site, treat the output as a first draft.

Base44

Base44 has a free plan with 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month. Paid plans run from $16 a month billed annually ($20 monthly) up to $160 ($200 monthly), according to pricing trackers checked on 3 November 2026. Custom domains start on the first paid plan, and GitHub integration starts at Builder. Credits come in two pools: message credits for building and integration credits for running live features.

Lovable

Lovable’s plans and credits page covers Free, Pro and Business. Trackers that read its pricing page list Pro at $25 a month with 100 monthly credits, and Business at $50. The free plan gives 5 daily credits, capped at 30 a month.

Bolt, v0 and Replit

Bolt charges by tokens rather than credits, with a free tier and, per pricing trackers, a Pro plan at about $25 a month. v0 and Replit also bill by usage, so the cost depends on how much you iterate.

Claude and ChatGPT

General-purpose AI assistants can draft page code and copy. They suit technical teams or a marketer working with a developer. You still need hosting, forms, analytics, and someone to review the code, because there is no editor or publishing system built in.

The catches with AI builders

  • Credits run out faster than expected. Each revision uses credits, and live features can draw on a second pool.
  • Search and AI crawlers may see very little. Many AI builders produce client-side apps, where the server sends an almost empty page and JavaScript fills it in. Lovable’s own FAQ says its apps use client-side rendering by default and recommends prerendering for SEO. A third-party guide reports that projects created from 13 May 2026 use server-side rendering instead, so check how yours was built. Base44 users have asked for server-side rendering on its feedback board. A quick test: open the page, choose View Source and search for your headline. If it is missing, crawlers that do not run JavaScript will not see it. We cover why that matters in how brands get cited in AI search.
  • Check ownership. Look at code export, GitHub sync and hosting on your plan, so you can move or hand over the site later.
  • Check the basics on every page. Each one needs its own title, description and H1.
  • Security and data are your job. Forms collect personal data, so consent and privacy must be in place before launch.

Free tools for measuring and improving conversion

  • Google Analytics 4: free. Set up conversion events for forms, calls and key clicks. The catch is the learning curve, and cookie consent affects what it records.
  • Google Search Console: free. Shows the queries and pages that bring visitors and any indexing problems.
  • Microsoft Clarity: free heatmaps and session recordings that show where visitors click and stall. Needs consent where the law requires it.
  • PageSpeed Insights: a free speed report. Scores vary between runs, so fix the biggest items rather than chase the number.
  • Looker Studio: free dashboards that combine Analytics and Search Console data.

These tools show what happened. They do not tell you what to change. Free A/B testing is also limited, so most small teams start with before-and-after comparisons and change one thing at a time.

Which route fits your team?

There is no single right answer. Match the route to the situation you are in.

  • You need something live this month and your offer is simple. A builder such as Wix or Squarespace, or WordPress with a good theme, will do the job.
  • Content and search are central to your growth. WordPress or Webflow, with one named owner for content. Bring in specialist help for technical SEO and structured data.
  • You want to test a new offer or landing page quickly. Use an AI builder for the first version. Before you send paid traffic to it, have the page reviewed and check what crawlers can see.
  • You are replacing a site that already brings in leads. Get support for redirects, tracking and testing. The risk is losing the rankings and enquiries you already have.
  • Your site needs to connect to a CRM, booking system or product data. This is usually developer or agency work, because integrations are where simple tools run out.

What your in-house team can handle, and where support helps

Yes, a capable in-house team can build a high-converting website. If you have someone who writes clearly, someone comfortable in WordPress or a builder, and the discipline to measure results, you can get a long way.

TaskIn-houseWhere support helps
Messaging and offerYes. You know your buyers bestAn outside view on positioning and competitors
Building pagesYes, on WordPress, Wix or SquarespaceCustom design systems, performance and integrations
TrackingOften partlyEvent design, tag setup and reporting you can trust
Conversion testingSlow without time and trafficAudits and test design

The best set-ups are often shared. Your team owns the content and day-to-day updates, and a specialist handles the audit, the technical build and the tracking.

Working with an agency: what it looks like at Burst

Burst Digital is a web design and digital marketing agency with offices in London, New York and San Francisco. Our portfolio lists 500+ projects, and we are rated 4.9/5 on Clutch.

Every engagement starts with research into your customers, competitors, positioning, and funnel, so we find what is limiting results before we design anything. That might be unclear messaging, weak landing pages, tracking gaps or a slow site.

Abby Connect, a virtual receptionist company, asked us to build a website “that was modern and converted visitors into paid clients”. We designed and built it, wrote the content, created custom images and optimised it for search, with weekly planning meetings throughout. Their CEO, Nathan Strum, said on Clutch: “Burst Digital’s communication is fantastic.”

Nick Webb, Partner at Accellency, put it this way on Clutch: “Burst Digital is very attentive to their clients.” You can read more in our case studies

We work with in-house teams as often as we replace them. Some clients hand us the whole build. Others ask for an audit, a build on WordPress or Webflow, or help with tracking and search, while their own team runs the site.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude build a website?

They can write page code and copy, but they cannot run the site. You still need hosting, forms, analytics and a person to review the code before it goes live.

Are AI website builders good for SEO?

It depends on how the site is rendered. Many generate client-side apps that search and AI crawlers may struggle to read. Check View Source, set unique titles and descriptions, and confirm the builder supports prerendering or server-side rendering.

Do I need WordPress for a high-converting website?

No. Conversion comes from the offer, proof, layout and tracking, not the platform. WordPress suits content-heavy sites and teams that want flexibility. Wix, Squarespace and Webflow suit simpler sites.

Can my in-house team build a high-converting website?

Yes, if someone owns the messaging, someone can build and maintain the site, and you measure results. Many teams add outside help for audits, tracking and technical work.

What free tools help improve conversion?

Google Analytics 4 for conversion events, Search Console for search performance, Microsoft Clarity for heatmaps and recordings, and PageSpeed Insights for speed.

When should we hire a web design agency?

When the site needs custom design and integrations, when a redesign puts rankings at risk, or when your team lacks the time or technical depth. Many teams use an agency for part of a project, not all of it.
